The LACA awards aim to honour the best individuals and teams working in the UK school meals sector and were a welcome reward for all the hard work and dedication the catering team have put in over the last few years.
The QE Kitchen staff said of their win, “It’s amazing to have our hard work recognised by one of the leading organisations in the industry. We are so proud of the whole team!”
Since 2014, the QE Kitchen team have been working tirelessly to complete an ambitious five-year plan focused on preparation, procurement, produce, people and publication. This project has seen a new 3-week menu, a new ‘light bite’ menu, the harvesting of Collegiate vegetables and the start of the popular ‘Growing club’, the introduction and upkeep of three delightful hens, Piri Piri, Big Bird and Cluck Norris (named by the pupils) and the launch of QE Kitchen social media. In addition, the kitchen team run three oversubscribed cooking and baking clubs a week and create online tutorials.
Contributing to their successful bid to win this year, the QE kitchen team also host catering events such as ‘International Week’ where students can try freshly prepared dishes from around the world and ‘Healthy Lifestyles Week’ where pupils can get involved in educational healthy eating competitions, workshops and meals. For the first time, a local school will join in the Healthy Lifestyles Week competition where pupils design a healthy menu, and will come to QE for lunch to sample the winning menu.
The recent 2019 LACA award is just one of many awards the catering team have achieved over the years. In January, the QE Kitchen team won the LACA School of the Year Award for Healthy Eating and Chef, James Brown, came Runner Up for the LACA School Chef of the Year Award, having narrowly missed out on the title by just 1 point.
The QE Kitchen staff are currently catering for many of the summer camps at QE and are looking forward to creating a delicious menu for the Camp QE kids when they arrive at the beginning of August.
