EAL

English As An Additional Language (EAL)

Chapter House offers a programme dedicated to immersing and supporting children who are learning to speak English as an additional language.

EAL students attend all lessons with their year group, helping them to integrate and learn the language with English speaking students. For those needing extra help, staff will create a short-term intervention programme and teaching assistants are available to offer additional support.

The Collegiate is fortunate to have a fantastic international community of students and staff who work together to celebrate everyone’s culture and nationality. To ensure your child feels like they are part of the community, older students and Liaison Officers provide opportunities for them to speak and express themselves in their first language. Also, Boarding staff host an International Club to bring different nationalities together and Cultural Awareness week celebrates international students’ cultural dress and cuisine.

Give Your Child A Taste of QE

Queen Ethelburga’s hosts an International Summer School for children ages 7 to 17.

The Summer School is a great way to experience the school before applying and offers English language lessons, exciting activities with English speaking children, and trips to London or Manchester.

EAL Lessons Begin in Early Years Foundation Stage

For children in Early Years Foundation Stage (Queen’s Kindergarten, Nursery or Reception) language learning is greatly improved by building on home experiences and using play as a tool for learning. Each EAL child will have a key person to help them take part in activities and practise their home language in addition to English.
