Athletics at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate

You can compete in Track and Field (T&F) or Cross Country (XC) with the Athletics programme at QE.

Outside of the curriculum, we encourage you to join Track and Field Running Clubs and take part in Athletics during lunchtime or after-school.

As part of our annual athletics itinerary, we host and compete against local schools. Students also participate in the English Schools Athletics Association (ESAA) Track and Field Cup, Harrogate and Craven Athletic Clubs events and the ISA Championships.

Previously, athletes at QE have represented county, England North, England Juniors and Great Britain Juniors. Post-QE athletes have gone on to represent Great Britain Seniors and England Senior teams.

The athletics facilities at QE are of the highest standard and include an all-weather floodlit track, four long jump pits and high jump and throwing areas.

Queen Ethelburga’s provides opportunities to compete in Track and Field (T&F) and Cross Country (XC) for students across the school.

QE has close links with England Athletics, hosting EA events, allowing students to train with elite athletes and receive specialist coaching.

QE also has close links to the City of York Athletic Club, where talented students have the opportunity to compete in team and other individual competitions.

Meet The Coach

Athletics coaching is provided by Mr Paul Daynes, who is an England Athletics Performance Coach in Sprints and Hurdles (previously recognised as Level 3).

Mr Daynes has coached athletics for 15 years, having previously coached football and hockey. As a coach at City of York Athletics Club, Mr Daynes has coached athletes who have won national age-group, English Schools, regional and county titles.

Mr Daynes has a strong focus in developing techniques to improve all aspects of athletic performance. Working closely with regional lead coaches from England Athletics, he develops good relationships with athletes and their personal coaches to help achieve shared goals and an athlete-centred approach.

As a specialist speed coach, Mr Daynes has engaged with various sports including rugby union, hockey and football to develop athlete balance, stability, movement and speed generation to maximise potential.
