We take great care over every application made to Queen Ethelburga’s and do our best to make the process as easy and straightforward as possible.
You can begin your application at any point of the year, and you will be kept in close contact with the Admissions Team and key senior staff.
UK Education System Explained
UK schools follow a National Curriculum that is constructed into five Key Stages:

Overview Of The Collegiate’s Four Schools
Chapter House (3 months to Year 5) |

Children can join Chapter House at any point of the year during Kindergarten and Nursery. At the age of 4, children will move to Reception in September and new starters are expected to join the school at the beginning of the academic year. Children can join any year group in Chapter House. In Year 3, students can begin boarding at Queen Ethelburga’s and we have a comprehensive programme for students who speak English as an additional language (EAL). At the end of Year 5, students are prepared for transitioning to King’s Magna. |
King’s Magna (Year 6 to Year 9) |
Pupils attend King's Magna when they reach Year 6. Pupils are welcome to apply to join any of the King’s Magna year groups, with the expectation that they join the school at the beginning of the academic year. To enrol at King’s Magna in Year 6 or 7, students must achieve at least 3.5 in their IELTS exam or equivalent. In Year 9, students with low level English skills can enrol onto the Key Stage 4 Preparation Course to prepare them for sitting their Cambridge exams, whilst also developing their English. New students must have achieved at least 4.5 in their IELTS exam or equivalent. At the end of Year 9, students are prepared for transition into The College or The Faculty. Queen Ethelburga’s offers a unique choice of two different senior school pathways for students in Years 10 to 12. |
The Faculty (Year 10 to Year 13) |
Students may join the Faculty in September or January of Year 10, 11 or 12. They follow a personalised pathway of academic, creative, or vocational courses designed to enable them to progress towards higher education or employment. Students with low level English can enrol onto the Intensive English Programme which is a two- to five-year course dependent on age, prior learning and English competence. To be offered a place on the Intensive English Programme, students must have a percentile score of 25 or above in the Mathematics, Non-Verbal and Spatial sections of the CAT4 and have achieved at least 4 in Year 10, or 4.5 in To be offered a place on the two-year GCSE course, students must have achieved at least a grade 5 in their IELTS exam or equivalent. To be offered a place on the two year A Level/BTEC Course with IELTS/EAL lessons, students must have achieved at least a grade 6 in their IELTS exam or equivalent. |
The College (Year 10 to Year 13) |
Students may join The College in September or January of Year 10, 11 or 12. They follow a traditional academic route towards higher education, through GCSE and A Level courses. Students with low level English can enrol onto the Advanced Intensive English Programme (AIEP) which is a two to five year course dependent upon age, prior learning, and English competence. To be offered a place on the Advanced Intensive English Programme, students must have a score of 60 or above in the Mathematics, Non-Verbal and Spatial percentile sections of the CAT4 and have achieved at least grade 5 in their IELTS exam or equivalent. To be offered a place on the two-year GCSE Course (with Additional Qualifications), students must have a score of 60 or above in the Mathematics, Non-Verbal and Spatial percentile sections of the CAT4 and have achieved at least 5.5 in their IELTS exam or equivalent. To be offered a place on the two-year A Level/BTEC Course with IELTS/EAL Lessons, students must have a score of 60 or above in Mathematics, Non-Verbal and Spatial percentile sections of the CAT4, achieved grade 7+ GCSEs or equivalent and scored at least 6 in their IELTs exam or equivalent. |
