Mathematics is taught every day in Chapter House from Early Years Foundation to Key Stage Two.
At Chapter House, we want every child to enjoy mathematics and feel confident in their ability to succeed. Through a consistent approach to learning, children build on their previous knowledge each year, developing their fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. The use of practical equipment, visual representations and classroom resources helps children make sense of new ideas, deepen their understanding and develop independence as young mathematicians.

An Engaging CurriculumMathematics teaches children how to make sense of the world by developing their ability to calculate, reason and solve problems. Early Years Foundation Stage
Learning about numbers 1 to 10, measures, shape and spatial thinking begins in Nursery. Children are gradually introduced to mathematics through “Magic Moments” – short, planned activities that develop their mathematical understanding – while teachers incorporate play wherever possible. Many of our resources are sourced from "White Rose Maths".
Key Stage One
The mathematical foundations established in Nursery and Reception are built upon throughout Key Stage One as children develop their understanding of number and calculation.
In Year 1, children focus on number and place value, addition and subtraction, measurement and money, while beginning to explore multiplication and division through practical activities. In Year 2, children work with larger numbers, developing confidence and fluency with addition and subtraction and using multiplication and division more formally. They also deepen their understanding of fractions, time, money and shape, applying their skills to solve problems in a range of contexts.
Children regularly practise recalling key number facts, including number bonds and multiplication facts, helping them to develop accuracy, fluency and confidence.
Key Stage Two
As children progress through Key Stage Two, lessons build on the foundations established in the Early Years and Key Stage One. Children are introduced to increasingly complex mathematical concepts while continuing to develop their fluency in key number skills. They are encouraged to reason, solve problems and apply their understanding in a range of contexts, with appropriate support and challenge.
In Year 3, children develop their understanding of place value, the four operations and fractions, while building fluency in multiplication and division. In Year 4, children deepen their understanding of fractions and decimals, strengthen their calculation skills and develop rapid recall of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. In Year 5, children work with larger numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages, applying their knowledge to increasingly complex calculations and problem-solving activities.
Throughout Chapter House, children follow the National Curriculum and regularly revisit previous learning to strengthen their understanding, improve recall and make connections between different areas of mathematics. Ongoing assessment and teacher feedback help to identify next steps and ensure that children are supported and challenged appropriately.
