Music

Music at King’s Magna

King’s Magna offers a wide range of different music activities, both within and outside of the curriculum.

In addition to the specialist-led curriculum music lessons, all students can have individual peripatetic lessons in a variety of different instruments, where they can progress through Grades 1-8 and even onto National Diplomas.

From Year 6, all pupils have the option to add an extra music class to their standard curriculum lessons. At lunchtime, after school and on Saturdays, students can enhance their musical learning through participating in the KM Choir, String Group, QE Orchestra, Classical Chamber Choir, QE Jazz Band and school production rehearsals. The studios are available for individual and group practice, with recreational bands outside of the curriculum encouraged.

Competitions

Gifted students can compete locally and internationally in music competitions.

QE has a history of musical success throughout all schools, with an ISA Junior Musician of the Year (Chapter House, 2023), an ISA Senior Musician of the Year Award (QE College, 2023) and a First Place in the ISA Band Competition Middle School Category (King’s Magna, 2023).

Performance

At King’s Magna there are several opportunities for pupils to perform to audiences of over 300 people.

Highlights of the academic year include the Choral Service at Ripon Cathedral, the Verse-Us Choir Competition at King’s Theatre, QE’s Speech Day and the annual KM Production. Students can also get involved in whole school projects such as our hit song, ‘Feels Like Home’, which featured vocals, lyrics and melodies from talented Year 6 pupils.
