Personal Development

Personal Development at Queen Ethelburga’s College

At Queen Ethelburga’s College, our Personal Development lessons are created to help you grow in confidence, learn responsibility and become well-rounded young adults.

Our Personal Development programme is taught to Key Stage Four (Years 10 to 11), while General Studies is delivered to Key Stage Five (Years 12 to 13).

What is Personal Development?

At QE, Personal Development refers to our comprehensive programme of personal, social, health, and careers education. These lessons build on the strong foundation developed in Key Stage Three, helping students navigate the challenges and opportunities of teenage life.

Promoting Respect and Understanding

A crucial part of personal development is promoting respect, tolerance, and an appreciation for others. Throughout the year, our students take part in awareness campaigns highlighting key social, moral, spiritual, and cultural issues.

For example, our senior students launched an inspiring Culture Catwalk to celebrate and showcase the diverse range of nationalities and traditional dress at QE. Additionally, the Pastoral Team organises engaging activities and whole-school events such as Odd Socks Day for Anti-Bullying Awareness Week, and Chinese New Year celebrations during Cultural Awareness Week.

Personal Development Lessons in Key Stage Four

In Year 10, Personal Development lessons focus on a range of practical and relevant topics, including:

  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle
  • Staying safe beyond the school gates
  • Understanding the justice system
  • How mortgages and financial commitments work

As students begin their GCSE years, they are also introduced to options for A Levels and other future pathways.

In Year 11, Personal Development revisits important areas such as:

  • Drug education
  • Sexual health and healthy relationships
  • Budgeting and managing personal finances
  • CV writing and interview skills
  • Fraud awareness

During the May half-term, Personal Development shifts focus to revision support, helping students prepare confidently for their GCSE examinations.

General Studies Lessons in Sixth Form

For Key Stage Five, General Studies replaces Personal Development and continues to address key themes relevant to senior school students. Each week, students engage with visiting speakers from universities and professional sectors, exploring topics such as:

  • Healthy relationships
  • Sex education
  • Substance abuse
  • Road safety and driving skills

General Studies may also be taken as an additional A Level, providing further opportunities to enhance university applications.

Enriching the School Community

Personal development in senior schools at QE extends beyond the classroom. Students play an active role in supporting our community, whether as Prefects welcoming new students and families on Open Days, or by serving as Peer Mentors, Subject Ambassadors, or members of the student council.

Moreover, all Key Stage Four students complete a First Aid and Restart a Heart course as part of their Personal Development. These essential skills ensure that students know how to respond in a medical emergency, both in and outside of school.
