Academic Subjects at Queen Ethelburga’s College
The adventure of learning is unique for everyone, and our staff are experts at helping you choose the route and the subjects that match your aspirations.
At Queen Ethelburga’s College, we build individual skill profiles based on current academic performance and CAT4 scores to help our students choose a realistic programme for success. Enjoying the learning journey is as important as the destination.
As one of the top independent senior schools in the UK, we offer an extensive selection of GCSE, BTEC and A Level subjects. Our large school size means we can be flexible with your timetable and offer additional opportunities, such as the Performance Sports Programme, or fast-track and extension courses available for high-achievers.

"Leaders are alert to ways in which both the curriculum and teaching can be improved. For example, the school day has been restructured to give additional teaching time to pupils on GCSE and A Level courses. This has enabled pupils to acquire a deeper knowledge and understanding of some topics and has improved their progress." QUEEN ETHELBURGA'S ISI INSPECTION REPORT, OCTOBER 2023 |
Choosing Your Options
Key Stage Four (Ages 14 to 16)
For Years 10 and 11, you will have the option to study a range of subjects, and it is recommended that you select a broad and balanced curriculum that supports your future choices. Except for English, Mathematics, Science, and Languages, most career paths do not require you to have studied a particular subject in Key Stage 4. Rather, employers are generally more interested in grades achieved and enthusiasm for learning.
There are two pathways you can choose between at Key Stage Four:
- Fast-Track Programme: Complete half of your GCSEs in Year 10 and the remainder in Year 11. Students are grouped according to their subject interests and abilities.
- Two-Year Programme: Spread GCSE and BTEC qualifications across two years. This option allows students to combine traditional GCSE subjects with practical BTEC courses.
Sixth Form (Ages 16 to 18)
For students in Years 12 and 13, we offer a wide range of A Levels and Level 3 BTEC qualifications to match your academic strengths and future aspirations. Alongside your four chosen subjects, we offer a fifth timetabled option that can be used for:
- The Performance Sports Programme
- English language support
- Completing an Extended Project Qualification
- Additional time for creative arts subjects
- Completing a fifth A Level
