A Letter To Our Esports Captains of 2024-2025
Dear Esports Captains,
Indulge me for a moment and let me tell you a story about a room in the middle of the school that nobody wanted. It’s a room that had been bandied around a few different departments. It has no natural light. None of the rooms it connects to has any natural light either. Rooms sometimes have an aura, a soul, a feeling which is projected to all those who enter it. For Gates, the aura was represented by the sigh exhaled by students who were told they had a lesson in there.

The room was picked, partly at random, partly as the room least attractive to all the Heads of Department, in which to set up the esports computers. From here, Gates’ new identity was born. But when I first walked into it in September 2023, the room still felt soulless somehow. Something was missing. That turned out to be you. Energy, ideas, laughter, conversations, victory, losses, friendships, frustration, teamwork, support, happiness, team-building, determination, and all the other things which give life, purpose and, dare I say it, a soul to a place; that’s what you brought to a dark, forgotten little room in the middle of the best school in the world. |
Esports is now one of the highlights of the tour when parents and prospective students come to look at the school. On open days, when I have esports activities set up for prospective students to have a go at, their parents will often watch enviously for a couple of minutes before I ask if they’d like to have a go as well. I’ve never had one say no. Students and staff who I have no other interaction with come up to me to congratulate me on the latest set of results. Students come to me sheepishly to ask if they might have a go- they’re into esports, they’re just a bit nervous. But you all work so hard with every person that comes through the door- and there’s plenty these days- that they all go away happy, confident and feeling a part of something. That’s what you’ve given to this room. That’s what you’ve given to me.
I will never be able to repay you for what you’ve brought to Gates. I’ll never be able to thank you for shaping Q-Esports in your image. I won’t ever stop talking about you or boasting about having got to work with you. I’m proud of you. I will be grateful to all of you forever, and I’m going to miss you so much.
Thanks,
Mr L
