Queen Ethelburga’s Launches Weekly Boarding for Years 3 to 13

Queen Ethelburga’s, a leading independent day and boarding school in Yorkshire, has introduced a new weekly boarding school option for students aged 7 to 18.

This flexible boarding choice allows students to stay on campus from Sunday night to Friday evening, providing five nights in the school’s award-winning accommodation before heading home for the weekend. Families pay for only five nights instead of seven, making it a more cost-effective alternative to full boarding.

Why Choose a Weekly Boarding School?

A weekly boarding school offers the best of both worlds: structured weekdays for focused learning and enrichment, plus quality family time at weekends.

It’s ideal for:

  • Families who live near York but are too far for daily commuting.
  • Parents with demanding work schedules.
  • Children who benefit from a consistent routine and a safe, welcoming home-from-home environment.

Weekly boarders enjoy the same facilities, activities, and pastoral care as full boarders - the only difference is that weekends are spent at home. For occasional needs to stay over the weekend, such as exam revision weekends or when parents are away, families can opt for incidental boarding.

Weekly Boarding at Queen Ethelburga’s

One of the main advantages of boarding at Queen Ethelburga’s is the unparalleled access to facilities outside of normal school hours.

Students can work out in the newly refurbished gym, complete with ice baths, water treadmills, and top-of-the-range Eleiko equipment, officially opened by sporting legend Kevin Sinfield. They can unwind at Muggles, the school’s activity hub featuring a cinema room, coffee shop, and games suite, or enjoy the outdoor activity zone with a climbing wall, bouldering wall, race track, padel court, foosball tables, and social spaces.

Boarding houses feature ensuite bedrooms, shared living areas, and a warm community atmosphere. Younger weekly boarders have age-appropriate rooms with low-level furniture, smaller beds, and the option of baths instead of showers. Older students enjoy modern, newly decorated rooms, while Sixth Formers benefit from exclusive access to The Atrium — a stylish dining hall with balconies and relaxed common spaces.

Evenings often include “Power Hour” for homework or revision with staff support, followed by the much-loved “toast time”: snacks and a hot drink before heading to bed.

Extra Support in the Holidays

Queen Ethelburga’s also offers two options for additional care between term times:

  • Holidays at QE: A relaxed, on-site boarding programme where students can access the gym, swimming pool, creative arts facilities, and study spaces, with optional trips to local attractions. Perfect for exam preparation or simply enjoying campus life.
  • Camp QE: An energetic multi-activity day camp for ages 3 to 16, packed with games, competitions, and creative workshops from 8 am to 5:30 pm.
