During the last week of term, QE’s Year 13 students enjoyed an end of year celebration in the King’s Theatre to mark the end of their time in the Sixth Form. This wonderful event included speeches from senior staff and subject prizes awarded to students for their outstanding attainment and commitment.
In line with the tradition of the usual QE Leavers’ Service (unable to take place this year due to ongoing restrictions), there were some readings by students who wrote a letter to their past, present and future self in order to reflect upon their valuable experiences. The service was followed by a social event in a beautifully decorated marquee where students received their famous QE Eagles, had their photographs taken, were entertained by a magician and also presented with student-led informal awards in order to round up the evening.
Speaking as part of the celebrations, Amy Martin, Chair of the Collegiate Board, said ‘I would like to say how incredibly grateful I am for everyone who has played their part in our journey over the last academic year. Our Collegiate Board, our staff teams, our students and our parents.
I have been humbled by the support we have received, and the strength of character shown by you all, as we have pulled together as a community to achieve so much in the face of so many challenges. I am incredibly proud of everyone.
To our Year 13s – I know that you are all now firmly in receipt of your Eagles, symbolising your life long part of our QE family. The very best of luck to you all. You go out into the world as QE’s finest ambassadors; the class of 2021 will be the most resilient and adaptable yet. Watch out world, you will be a force to be reckoned with!’
Dan Machin, Acting Principal, said ‘Our College and Faculty students epitomise the virtues that we encourage in all our QE students, those of mutual respect, support, tolerance and compassion. Our Year 13s have experienced the second year in a row where their public examinations have been cancelled, all of our senior school students have had to adapt to the ever-changing national situation of lockdown, bubbles, online and blended learning, and I would like to commend each and every student for the way they have supported staff and each other in making sure that their achievements this year are as strong as they have ever been.
They have not just done well given the circumstances, they have done outstandingly well by any measure that you choose to use and any comparison with any other calendar year or group of students, and they should be exceptionally proud of what they have done this year.
I would like to acknowledge the fantastic work of the prefects. Our sixth form prefects, led by Cyrus Zarrebini and Kate Snoddy, have adapted the way they have led their duties and responsibilities to ensure that they are as invaluable as ever. Thank you to all of our prefects, and other students who assume other leadership responsibilities, for the contribution you have made.’
Kevin Oldershaw, Head of The College, said ‘As usual, we are only able to scratch the surface of what has been achieved overall, but, given the disruption for so much of the academic year, it is tremendous to see what has still been achieved. Despite the challenges of the last 12 months, QE students have continued to achieve, develop and enjoy success. Congratulations to all of our prize winners, but also to all of our amazing students across both College and Faculty, we would like to thank them for their dedication, commitment and good humour.’
Erica Papaglimis, Head of The Faculty, said ‘The achievements of our year 13 students has been remarkable and we are confident they have gained the skills and self-awareness to drive forward and continue to add to their success. The rewards will be well deserved and I wish you all the best for your futures’.
