Exciting Changes at Queen Ethelburga’s in North Yorkshire

Queen Ethelburga’s, one of North Yorkshire’s leading independent schools on the outskirts of York, has announced exciting developments for 2025. Building on its tradition of academic excellence, QE is reshaping its senior school structure and welcoming expert new sports staff to support students’ growth on and off the field.

These changes follow another impressive year of results, with 77% of students achieving A*-A grades and 91% securing A*-B grades at A Level. They underline QE’s commitment to delivering an unrivalled educational experience for pupils aged 3 months to 19 years.

A New Senior School for Years 10 to 13

From September 2025, Queen Ethelburga’s will merge its two current senior schools – the award-winning QE Faculty and QE College – into one exceptional provision for Years 10 to 13. The new school will retain the name Queen Ethelburga’s College, creating a unified pathway offering academic, vocational, sport, creative, and co-curricular opportunities under one roof.

This move simplifies progression for students and ensures access to the full breadth of QE’s outstanding facilities and teaching expertise, preparing learners for life at top UK and global universities, as well as high-level careers in sport, business, the arts and more.

Lauren Blakeley, Head of QE College, said:

“This change allows us to offer an education that fits around each student’s individual aspirations. It’s the next step in ensuring our senior pupils enjoy the best possible opportunities during their GCSE and A Level years.”

Welcoming UEFA-Licensed Coaches to the Sports Team

As part of its focus on sport and performance pathways, Queen Ethelburga’s has appointed three full-time UEFA A-licensed football coaches.

  • Matt Derbyshire, a former England U21 international and professional striker, brings over 20 years of playing and coaching expertise.
  • Sam Sharman, with experience at the FA and in para football, will lead engagement and partnerships.
  • Ashley Vickers, previously at Manchester City Women’s Academy, will focus on enrichment and inclusion, supporting players of all abilities.

They join existing UEFA A coach Paul Bolland and UEFA B coach Yousif Mohammed, expanding the support available for talented players and those simply looking to enjoy sport.

Principal Dan Machin said:

“We’re delighted to welcome our new coaches. They will inspire students while enhancing technical skills, teamwork and personal growth.”

Outstanding Facilities and Enrichment Opportunities

QE’s commitment to holistic education is reflected in its state-of-the-art facilities and extensive activity programme. Students can access a 312-seat theatre, 25-metre swimming pool, triple-court sports hall, 3G and grass pitches, a high-performance gym opened by Kevin Sinfield, and a new outdoor play and climbing area with one of the UK’s first school padel courts.

Beyond sport, pupils take part in over 150 weekly activities, from performing arts and esports to motorsports and international trips. QE Motorsports even competes in the BRSCC Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup, while esports teams rank among the top in the UK, with Minecraft squads set to compete in the Daigon Esports World Championship in Malta.

Enhanced Early Years Provision

QE’s on-site nursery has also undergone a rebrand. Formerly Queen’s Kindergarten, it is now Explorers Nursery, offering inclusive childcare for children aged three months and above from 7.30 am to 6 pm.
