Yorkshire Sixth Form Welcomes Student Motorsport Challenge

Famous Yorkshire Sixth Form, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate, is driving new and exciting extra-curricular opportunities for its students. Notably, QE is the first school to join the Student Motorsport Challenge, which, until now, has only included universities and colleges.

JP from Student Motorsport started the challenge at QE with a team from Oxford Brookes University. The university team taught students how to build a race car and organised a fun "Pit Stop Challenge." After that, Year 12 students and QE staff worked with Race Engineer Will Snuggs from WJS Motorsport Engineering & Trackside to turn a standard Citroen C1 into a race-ready car.

Preparation: A Challenge Within Itself.

Within just three weekends, students had already stripped the car to prepare for new race parts. They built the car in time to compete in the BRSCC Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup Championship at Croft Circuit. The team broke new ground during their first weekend.

Remarkably, the Yorkshire Sixth Form won 2nd in Class in their first-ever race and 4th place in the second and third races.

QE Motorsport Team Principal, Helen Snuggs, said: “The enthusiastic student team has worked hard with our driver and performed amazingly. They experienced everything from building a car to race meeting procedures, live pit wall timings, and scrutineering. As the first—and only—school competing, we have broken records that have never been set before. Our driver, Arthur Simondet, has been so engaging. He consistently won the fastest lap for the SMC (Novice) category in our car. Looking ahead, we are excited about competing at Anglesey and the other four race weekends.”

Opening New Opportunities To Yorkshire Sixth Form Students

Matt Clayton, Head of Co-Curricular at QE, believes that “The Student Motorsport Challenge is a great opportunity for students. Moreover, it has become a fantastic addition to QE’s growing co-curricular programme. I’m thrilled with how the whole team has embraced the experience with a real sense of camaraderie and collaboration. Furthermore, to see a second place in our first ever race of our first ever championship is outstanding.”
