Sixth Form

A special time in a students life

Sixth Form at Queen Ethelburga's is much more than a two-year study course. It is a time to build the bridge from youth to adulthood, school to higher education and a career; it is a time to develop wider skills and confidence in preparation for the challenges of adult life.

We have two different, but closely linked schools in which students can choose from a wide range of options. Our curriculum is flexible, balanced and encourages breadth and all students are given the necessary support so that they can achieve their full potential.

The College offers a wide range of A Level choices alongside other enrichment subjects whilst in the Faculty students can choose A Levels, BTECs or a combination of the two. BTEC National Qualifications allow students to specialise and prepare for future careers in Art and Design, Performing Arts, Sport, Fashion and Design, ICT, Music Technology, Music Performance and Business. There is also the possibility of retaking GCSEs in Mathematics and English if necessary.

We welcome students from a wide variety of backgrounds and are very committed to promoting internationalism, so that students leave with the skills they need to cope in an increasingly global job market.

Alongside academic life, we offer an enrichment programme which offers a wide choice of sport, art, music and drama activities, as well as Critical Thinking, Politics, Leadership, Duke of Edinburgh, CCF, cookery, enterprise and debating. Students also follow a General Studies programme that covers life skills, personal development, university preparation and careers guidance.

The majority of our sixth form students from both the College and the Faculty go on to prestigious universities, including Oxford and Cambridge and those from the Russell Group. We are very proud of our success rate and, when it comes to university applications, we offer as much support as necessary in choosing courses and institutions.

Whether you are a boarder or a day student, Queen Ethelburga's offers a thriving social life and we organise a wide range of events both in school and in the local area. We arrange meals out, trips to theme parks, cinema trips and discos at school. Our annual Black Tie Dinner is a very enjoyable occasion. Our students mix well and enjoy all the social opportunities on offer and enjoy life as a community.

Our students leave us as well-rounded individuals who are able to take responsibility for themselves and other people. Their contribution is fundamental to the successful operation of the school and staff share ideas and responsibility with the Prefect team and the School Council.
