Living on Campus

Life as a Boarder.

At Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate we understand, and are responsive to, the need for all members of our community to be happy and content, in order to meet their potential and be 'the best that they can with the gifts that they have'. Our boarding provision is a wonderful base on which our pupils can develop socially, emotionally, morally and spiritually. All staff have a great deal of experience in providing a warm and supportive atmosphere which enables students to feel at home, thrive and learn for life.
It is important that there is joined up thinking in the care a child receives and so a close link is maintained between home and the Collegiate. The Pastoral Care website is updated weekly with news and events from the Boarding environment so parents and guardians can follow their child through the year. We also have a termly newsletter which is sent out summarising the term.

Being a boarder at Queen Ethelburga's gives you experiences beyond the ordinary. Whether that is in your academic work, in the clubs that you choose, in the trips you attend or in the friends that you make, you will find opportunities that will shape your life.
The pathways that our students follow depend on them as individuals, and this is something that we celebrate. We allow students to take combinations of courses, of activities and pursue interests that allow them to find out about themselves. There is no fixed route that they must follow, but they are guided and supported as they find the one that suits them best. Finally, we have a community at QE unlike any other. It is a unique blend of cultures and nationalities, where friendships are formed that last lifetimes, even if they do span continents. We have strong foundations built on listening to the needs of others, engaging with life and all it has to offer, attending every commitment with enthusiasm, respecting each other and never giving up on attaining our goals, however large or small they may be. It is our experienced and proactive boarding staff that inspire our students to these qualities every day.
It is the level of care within our community for the well-being and development of our students that makess boarding at QE an exciting and safe environment for our students as they move through their education. We create a second home for them, and try to emulate the boundaries and expectations that parents would implement.
At the heart of boarding is the desire to help them to learn for life, gaining the skills they need to be the very best that that they can be and to prepare them for the exciting challenges ahead.

To become a member of our vibrant Sixth Form is an exciting transition. Many boys and girls - including international students - choose to join the Collegiate at this stage.
QE offers a generous range of options in the Sixth Form, as well as preparing pupils for life at university and beyond. During these two years an increasingly adult approach is taken, both in the classroom and towards extra-curricular activities. Our Sixth Formers are role models within the Collegiate and we expect them to demonstrate responsibility, both in their academic and personal lives.
We believe it is equally important that they continue to broaden their horizons through outside interests, and to extend their ambitions so that they become the self-assured, articulate and motivated individuals for which QE is renowned.

All bedrooms are air-conditioned and have their own individual private en-suite bathroom with toilet and shower. Every boarding bedroom is provided with a direct-dial phone, timer controlled plasma 32 inch TV/ DVD complete with Sony Play Station, mini-kitchen with fridge, a hair dryer, iron and board, wash hand basin, heated towel rail and fan. Sixth form students-are also provided with a 3 seat leather settee, 55 inch LED TV (on a timer!) and their own washer/ dryer, printer/ scanner/ copier and Coffee Machine.
The boarders also have access to welfare rooms and a reflection room where they can take time to think or chat to staff or peer mentors in a safe and warm environment. Our 24 hour pastoral care team are also on hand to offer additional support and guidance, and to help with any questions our students may have. The Boarding houses also have spacious and comfortable common rooms where students are able to spend time together.

Flexi-boarding is where girls and boys may opt for boarding on an ad hoc basis. Flexiboarding enables parents to be away overnight, secure in the knowledge that their child is in a safe and caring environment in which they can continue their academic and extracurricular activities. It is strictly subject to availability and parents are advised to book as early as possible.

Boarders have the opportunity to sign up to trips at weekends ranging from cinema visits to international weekend breaks. There is also a huge amount on site to challenge and engage our students in their free time. We have fantastic sports facilities which leisure staff manage so students can swim, go to the gym or participate in fixtures or rehearsals for their favoured sport, aesthetic or theatrical activity. There are also activities run in the boarding house such as baking and crafts. House staff also take students to use the sporting facilities informally in the evenings.

Forces Community.

Our aim is to provide support to all of our forces families across the Collegiate, from Chapter House, through King's Magna and on to the College and Faculty. We have two forces coordinators who are from a forces background and run a drop-in session for students to attend if they want support, want help keeping in touch with home or want to meet some of our other students from across the campus. In addition to this we are developing our forces communities in school, connecting students who may live near or on the same base but may not know it. This is so they have friends they could meet with during our holiday periods at home.
