Armed Forces

We realise that living as a member of a Forces family is a pretty challenging experience and not normally fully understood by those who do not have to do it. Civilians not involved with the Forces find it difficult to imagine a job where you can be moved at little or no notice, invalided out on quite minor medical grounds or sent into a war zone with little or no means of contacting your family. Forces partners have to keep the family and home together for extended periods of time while partners are on unaccompanied postings. Having your children in a school where this is fully appreciated can help tremendously. We have over 300 Forces families, so your children will not feel isolated. My door is open and my telephone available for any Forces parent needing a sympathetic understanding of his or her situation.

Friendly And Caring - You can be assured that our teaching staff, and particularly our boarding staff, understand the emotional needs of our children. A houseparent looking after children requires patience, experience, understanding, common sense and humour. From bedtime stories to games; from the need for some common sense to some firm persuasion that a bedroom needs tidying up; for understanding when things are not going well: these help children settle and enjoy being boarders. Our boarding children know that no other independent school gives them as many home comforts as we do.

Excellent Results - QE College is ranked by The Times and the Daily Telegraph, as the top independent school in the north and the 4th UK day and boarding school overall and QE Faculty is ranked the second most successful independent school in the north and the 5th UK day and boarding school overall - yet we are NOT selective. Our children have a very broad range of academic ability and still our academic results put us amongst the top schools who accept only the strongest academic children.

Why do children achieve these superb results? The answer lies in dedicated, professional teaching staff, a campus with a huge amount of new investment, an ethos in the school of common-sense, a no-nonsense approach to studying and a happy environment. We all realise your children have only one shot at a first class education. We think that it is possible to achieve this and for them to enjoy their time with us. Every single child, without exception, is capable of excelling in some way.

Forces cut backs

Forces' cut backs have constantly been in the news, but, with the backing of our Charitable Foundation we have made our own cut back which will benefit Forces' families.

If you are entitled to claim the Forces' Boarding Schools Allowance - Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA) you will be pleased to know that our school is on the approved list. The allowance is for children who start in the school year in which they turn 8 years old, up to when they turn 18/19 years old. Children up to 18 years of age at school in the UK could also be entitled to three free return journeys a year to visit their parents serving on accompanied tours overseas. (Please note - you must claim before your child reaches year 12, as new awards are not given to years 12 and 13.)

Our Forces parental contribution is only £925 per term for 2017/18. Your Forces Award from our Charitable Foundation is worth, on average, around 30% of our normal UK Boarding Fees.

If you also use the MOD's Childcare Voucher Scheme, the termly contribution could fall to under £700 per term. This means we rank as one of the most competitively priced boarding schools in the UK for Forces' children.

If you want to register your child, please do so as soon as possible; there is a £295 registration fee which will be refunded in full if you do not get a CEA entitlement.
